Reciprocating compressor specialist Burckhardt Compression has been selected to supply boil-off gas (BOG) and pipeline injection compressors (MSO) for the under-construction German LNG Terminal regasification facility in Brunsbüttel, Germany.

The new onshore terminal is designed to replace a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that was installed at Brunsbüttel temporarily as part of German efforts to stop importing Russian natural gas and secure alternative sources of supply. The facility is expected to enter service in 2027.

Burckhardt’s equipment will be installed at the terminal to help with LNG handling and injection into Germany’s national gas grid.

“For this project, we chose Burckhardt Compression because of their extensive experience with LNG BOG management compressors, the high operational flexibility of their machines, and their proven track record with LNG terminal installations in Europe.” German LNG Terminal stated.

News of Burckhardt’s participation comes after local authorities issued the planning approval decision for the construction of the land and water-side harbour infrastructure for the onshore LNG terminal in September. The project has run into certain challenges as it moves forward, however. Public broadcaster NDR reported in early October that the terminal was now expected to cost EUR1.5bn ($1.6bn) to develop, up from a previous estimate of EUR1.3bn ($1.4bn). Additional funding is being sought from the German government, which owns a 50% stake in the project via state development bank KfW, to cover the increased costs.

Burckhardt’s compressors, including the Laby compressor, are designed to offer maximum operational flexibility for handling BOG operations. The company says that the Laby compressor remains the preferred compressor type on the market for oil-free compression services, especially for cryogenic liquid gas storage applications.
