Two firms have won a US$1.18 billion deal to replace the AirTrain at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

A joint venture between US-based construction contractors Tutor Perini and O&G Industries secured the contract with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The work involves the design and build of a new 2.5-mile-long elevated, automated people mover train system with three stations. It will replace the existing AirTrain, which has been in operation since 1996.

Tutor Perini is the managing partner, while O&G holds a 25% share in the joint venture.
