Rama Motori, the Italy-based distributor for John Deere engines in a series of European countries, has reported what is described as the first use application of the new John Deere JD4 engine.

The JD4 was first unveiled at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2023 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The engine has been fitted in a pump system developed by Scova Engineering, part of the Ocmis Group, an Italian firm which specialises in development of agricultural irrigation systems. This includes the self-propelled irrigators known as ‘rollers’.

The JD4 turbodiesel produces up to 129 kW (173 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque. The engine is US EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage 5 emissions compliant with no EGR.

Weight has been cut by more than 50 kg (110 lb), which has helped reduce the engine footprint by between 20 and 25% over the previous 4.5-litre single-turbo model.

A new diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) delivery system also features on the JD4, which has helped to extend fluid service intervals to 750 hours. Hydraulic lash adjusters decrease valve wear and eliminate valve lash maintenance.

Speaking about the project at the recent EIMA trade fair in Bologna, Italy, a representative from Scova told Power Progress International that the new pump was still in its prototype phase.

They said that once this test period has been completed, the JD4 engine will be returned to Rama Motori for analysis. Should the tests prove successful, it’s possible the prototype pumps could be made commercially available in 2026.
