Recip compressors to be used in hydrogen storage project in Germany
Borsig ZM Compression GmbH has completed a successful factory test run of the first of three Bx36 series reciprocating compressors designed for a hydrogen cavern storage project of RWE Gas Storage West GmbH in Gronau-Epe.
Borsig said the reciprocating compressors are specifically designed to meet the demands of hydrogen storage.
“Our machines handle high differential pressures with ease, making them ideal for use in hydrogen storage facilities,” said Martin Homann, sales director at Borsig ZM Compression GmbH.
Each of the three compressors has a drive power of 2800 kW. Notably, their large control range allows for both the initial filling and all future operational scenarios of the storage facility, the company said.
The hydrogen cavern storage facility in Gronau-Epe will be the first commercially operated underground hydrogen storage in Germany, providing a usable storage capacity of around 38 million standard cubic meters
The collaboration between Borsig ZM and RWE Gas Storage West highlights the importance of partnerships in the hydrogen industry.
“With Borsig ZM, we have found a reliable, innovative, and flexible partner for this pioneering project,” said Theresa Bethan, project lead at RWE Gas Storage West.
The commissioning of the compression systems, scheduled for 2026, will mark a crucial step in Germany’s hydrogen strategy, the companies said.
