Update: Coronavirus impacts natural gas shows

The coronavirus pandemic has created havoc to the trade show circuit in the natural gas industry. The GPA Midstream Convention is the latest trade show to join the growing list of canceled events.

The GPA Midstream Association announced the convention’s cancellation on its website. The event was scheduled for April 19-22 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“The unknown duration of the coronavirus impact makes rescheduling our event during 2020 impractical,” the association said on its website. “Canceling such an important annual event for our industry was a difficult decision, but please know that we look forward to holding our 2021 convention, scheduled for April 11-14 in San Antonio.”

The Eastern Gas Compression Roundtable’s (EGCR’s) executive committee canceled its annual event, which was slated for May 5-7 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“After 47 continuous years of hosting the annual roundtable, we have never before had to take such a drastic action but this current situation is something entirely different,” said Joyce Perhac, EGCR executive director, in an email statement. “In this time of uncertainty and challenges for every segment of our industry and society, we wish everyone well and pray that you and your families remain safe and healthy.”

The EGCR will not be rescheduled for 2020, Perhac said, adding that the next roundtable will occur from May 4-6, 2021.

The EGCR executive committee stated on Friday, March 13 that it would monitor the situation and make updates as needed every Friday.

The Gas Compressor Association canceled the GCA Expo and Conference, which was set to occur from March 24-27 in Galveston, Texas.

“After much discussion, contemplation and with overwhelming concern for the safety and well-being of our attendees, we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 GCA Expo & Conference,” the association said in a statement.

The association said it will handle hotel cancellations for all those who used its room block at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa & Convention Center. It will also send out separate emails next week to all those impacted with payment and refund instructions.

Delayed shows

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), set for May 4-7 in Houston, Texas, has been postponed. The staff said in a statement that the show will take place in the third quarter of 2020, in either August or September.

“By postponing rather than canceling OTC, we aim to preserve the significant work of the program committee and authors to prepare for this conference, as well as minimize the economic impact this decision has on businesses in Houston and throughout the industry,” OTC said in the statement.

The Southern Gas Association has pushed back two of its conferences – the Spring Gas Conference & Expo and Management Conference. The former will now take place from August 4-6 in Columbia, South Carolina. The association has not yet selected a new date for the Management Conference.

“Given the current situation, we have evaluated our schedule of upcoming events. We have decided to push these events back to the fall when the coronavirus and its remedy will be better controlled and understood,” said Suzanne Ogle, SGA’s chief executive officer in a statement.

The association is also taking additional precautionary measures, which include having all committee meetings occur via teleconference or webinar, as well as evaluating the fate of public workshops on a case-by-case basis.

The Asia Turbomachinery & Pump Symposium (ATPS) has also been postponed. Originally slated for early April, the show will occur from August 4-6 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Neuman & Esser and STASSKOL also postponed their respective events, which both take place in Germany. Compressor Day 2020 has moved to Oct. 8, 2020 and STASSKOL’s SealTech 2020, originally scheduled for May 13, has been rescheduled for 2021, with the exact date uncertain.

Messe Düsseldorf and OOO Messe Düsseldorf Moscow have postponed NEFTEGAZ, a networking platform for the Russian oil and gas industry. The trade show and the concurrently held National Oil and Gas Forum will now take place from June 22–25, 2020 at the Expocentre in Moscow, Russia.
