Baker Hughes, Launch New AI Application For Upstream Market

FLORENCE, ITALY – Baker Hughes and have launched BHC3 Production Optimization, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based software application designed to improve oil and gas production rates. The application, revealed at Baker Hughes’ Annual Meeting, serves as a monitoring product with the ability to learn from the data it collects and allow operators to use that information to make improvements to their upstream operations.

BHC3 Production Optimization uses machine-learning algorithms to gather and distribute real-time data for operators. The application creates a virtual blueprint of an upstream operation from individual and multiple wells to the pipeline, distribution and point-of-sale. The application can then use its AI capabilities to detect anomalies, provide production forecasts and offer actions to improve performance.

“BHC3 Production Optimization delivers the data visibility and optimization capabilities that are critical for upstream businesses to meet production targets during a time of growing energy demand,” said Derek Mathieson, chief marketing and technology officer, Baker Hughes. “Releasing this application is part of a continued commitment from Baker Hughes and to help the energy industry improve productivity and efficiency with enterprise-scale AI applications.”

BHC3 Production Optimization is part of the BHC3 AI Suite, the platform for all of’s AI-based applications. Through the platform, BHC3 Production Optimization can pinpoint future problems and improvements, such as where to install a new sensor, which sensor needs recalibration or where to increase water or gas injection to optimize production. The application can also alert operators to under or overproduction problems in real-time and generate predictions and prescribed actions.

“The energy industry is at an inflection point where companies globally are being challenged to make operations more efficient, safer and more productive,” said Ed Abbo, president and CTO, “To do this, they will need to harness and analyze massive amounts of data for actionable insights.”

BHC3 Production Optimization is the second AI software application developed out of the Baker Hughes and partnership announced in June 2019. The first was an AI-based application – BHC3 Reliability – for compressor stations, onshore and offshore platforms, refineries and petrochemical plants.
